About Basket Goals

Basket Goals is an independent index of hotels, organised into four categories that reward being read side by side: art hotels, capsule hotels, casino hotels and ice hotels. The grouping is deliberate. Each category answers a different question about what a hotel can be — a place to look at things, a place reduced to its smallest workable unit, a large resort building with a gaming floor inside it, or a building that only exists for part of the year.

How entries are written

Every entry is prose. We do not publish specification tables, key-value grids or scored comparisons, because the interesting thing about a hotel is rarely a list of attributes. What we try to record instead is how a building came to be the way it is, where it sits, and which one or two features genuinely set it apart from its neighbours.

We restrict ourselves to general, durable facts — the kind that stay true between seasons and do not need a citation to be credible. Anything that changes week to week, such as rates, availability or the current exhibition, belongs on the hotel's own site rather than here.

What we do not do

There are no star ratings on this site, no guest reviews, and no booking engine. We are not a travel agency and take no commission on stays. If an entry makes you want to go, the next step is the hotel's own website or a reservations desk.

Geography

The index is not tied to a single country or region. Hotels are chosen because they illustrate their category well, wherever they happen to stand.
